In the erstwhile West Bengal , all religious matters including Endowments and Wakf Institutions were being administered and controlled by the Department of Ecclesiastical Affairs known as Umoore-Mazhabi.

The Central Wakf Act 1954 was approved by the Parliament on 31st May,1954 and the said Act was extended to West Bengal on 15th January,1955 and to the whole of West Bengal . on 1st April,1955.
